Why Vinyl is the Fence Material of Choice at Frederick Fence

February 14, 2018 ~ Posted By Jim Jenkins

For many years, chain link and wood were the most popular fence materials for the average consumer and business owner.  They were (and still are) reasonably priced, easy to install and satisfied many needs, especially when it comes to keeping your children and pets inside the yard. Watch any television show or news broadcast from the 1950’s through the late 70’s and you’ll see many family sitcom homes surrounded by a chain link or wood perimeter.  Since the 1980’s, however, a new fence material arrived in the marketplace that’s now one of the most popular fence materials—especially in new housing communities that include a fence with the purchase of a home! We’re talking about vinyl fence.

Four Reasons Why Vinyl Fence Materials Rank as One of the Top Fence Materials

Vinyl fence, when first introduced, was considered a fence material for the wealthy.  Now it’s practically the market standard for new and first-time homeowners.  Why is this fence material so popular now?  Here are four reasons why:

Toughness
When it comes to fence materials that can withstand everything Mother Nature and humankind has to offer, vinyl fence remains the undisputed champion of strong fence materials. Vinyl fence can survive the harshest of weather conditions that come with every season, whether it’s high temperatures, gushing rains, or blustery snows.  Additionally, with vinyl, you never have to worry about pests, decay, and fungus. You put vinyl fence up and you’ll own a fence that will last for years.  Even the best crafted wood fence that can last up to 20 years will eventually require some type of repair.  And after several difficult winters or summers, wood fences may require you to replace worn down sections or apply some pressure-treated product to make them last.  Not vinyl!  You put it in the ground and it will most likely last longer than you own your home!

Maintenance
Other than the occasional hosing to remove dirt (which the rain often does for you), there’s no maintenance necessary for a vinyl fence, meaning you can simply enjoy it without having to invest in a lot of your weekends to make it last.  Imagine what you’ll do with all that extra time!  Wood fence requires periodic inspections to check for warps and bows as well as potential rot.  Additionally, to ensure your fence lasts more than five to seven years, you’ll need to apply some chemical treatment to seal it and a stain to maintain or enhance its color.  Depending on the size of your fence, those materials can get expensive through the years when you combine them with fence repairs due to extreme weather conditions.  With vinyl, you never have to worry again once it’s in the ground!

Cost
Vinyl costs more than wood and chain link.  That’s a fact and we don’t hide that from customers. Think long term and what you’ll soon realize is that vinyl costs less over the life of your home.  Once it’s in the ground, we’re taking no additional costs!  Except in cases of extreme weather or someone who fails to properly use their car or truck breaks, your vinyl fencing will last and last.  Planning on staying in your home for more than 10 to 15 years?  With vinyl, you’ll pay for that fence once and will maintain its value when you sell your home.

Flexibility
With vinyl, you can now design a fence that both meets your needs and expresses your creativity.  You can now design your own fence in practically every color or you can purchase vinyl fence panels that look exactly like wood, but will never warp, bow or eventually rot!  You can also choose from privacy panels to split rails or even design custom lattice work or ornate gazebos to match your fence.  In other words, with vinyl, you can have the most unique fence that reflects your personality and style—just be sure to check with your homeowner’s association or country government to make sure what you design meets their regulations and codes!

In 2008, Frederick Fence made the wise decision to invest in its own vinyl fabrication shop, meaning we can take pure vinyl materials and make our own posts and custom panels for our customers.  When our customers choose vinyl fence panels, they’re getting a strong fence what we help create from raw vinyl sheets, which makes our vinyl fences a bit more cost effective.

We pride ourselves on having a small, but expert team of three vinyl technicians—headed by our very own Todd Powers, who can take a blank profile and turn it into the fence of your dreams.  One reason why our vinyl fences are more durable is that we can route and shape our own post rails, meaning we can custom the size of the post and cut our own holes in the posts.  When we assemble them with our panels, they remain in place and will never fall out of alignment.  Some vendors may sell one size of post, which are sometimes not routed.  Instead you have to use clips to keep all the pieces together which equates to a fence that’s not as secure, strong or even as attractive.

Another difference is that we use 100% virgin vinyl.  Some vendors will say that they use vinyl made up of recycled materials.  While that may sound environmentally friendly, you need to inquire further as to what the vendor means by “recycled.”  Some manufacturers are great about telling you the basis for using recycled materials, such as PVC pipe.  That’s all well and good but there are some manufacturers who definition of recycled means that you could be purchasing the fourth or fifth generation of recycled materials, which can range from used milk cartons, old credit cards, buckets, jugs and cups.  Yes, not all recycled vinyl is created equal and that’s why we stick with 100% virgin vinyl so you get the best quality materials on the market.
